Alarcon, D'mitri CO: Leader On & Off the Mat

The Rush When I Win - Interview with D’mitri

Describe how you became interested in wrestling. "I started wrestling when I was 6. I like the rush when I win."

How have your parents participated in and supported your wrestling? "My mom Angelina is very supportive; she gets me to practice, works table help at my competitions, and she always finds a way for me to better myself."

Which coaches have been an important part of your wrestling experience and why? "Coach Ben Barrows of Bear Cave has been in my life since I was 7 years old. I don't know; we just clicked. He used to let me use his phone in between matches, and then it just went from there. He treats me like his own son. Honestly, if it wasn't for him, I'd probably not be so successful. Coach Ben VomBaur works you hard in practice but also lets us have fun. I like going to his house to fish, play board games, and paintball. He went to see me bull ride; that made me feel good like he had a personal interest in me.”

How have peers and siblings helped shape your wrestling? "I have good wrestling partners and they push me to get better."

In what ways has wrestling contributed to your success in the classroom and school community? "I'm a leader and that carries over to the classroom and community."

What makes participation in RMN Events rewarding, enjoyable, and challenging? "I know all the RMN event staff members. They are good to me. I like going to RMN tournaments all over the West because you never know who you are going to wrestle."

What are your future aspirations in the sport? In life? "I want to go to college; not sure where yet."

For a young wrestler just beginning, what words of wisdom would you have for him or her? "Don't give up; hard work pays off."

If you have aspirations in the sport after you are done competing (i.e., coaching), please detail how and why you plan to give back. "I go early to practice and help the little guys out."
